Search Engine Marketing (SEM) explained

Search Engine Marketing (SEM) involves promoting your website on search engine results with paid advertisements. The advertiser bids on search keywords that are related to the product they are selling. This gives the advertiser the opportunity to appear high up in search results that they might not naturally rank high for. It also allows the advertiser to focus their marketing budget on search terms they think are most likely to drive motivated customers to their website. Also known as pay per click ads they typically are in a text format. Choosing the right keywords is key to the success of an SEM campaign.

Both Google and Bing, the two biggest players in the market, have an SEM platform. The advertisers that appear at the top don’t always achieve this by having the highest bid. The search engines also look at other factors which Google refers to as the Quality Score.

The main factors that make up the Quality Score are:

  • Ad text relevance.
